What is Confirmation?
In your baptism, God claimed you as God's own, forgave your sin, delivered you from death and the devil, and promised you everlasting life.
But the thing is . . . for most of you, this happened even before you could say, “Mama.” At that point in your life, you were able to recognize your earthly parent’s voices, but you had no idea just WHO God was and WHY God gave you such a generous gift. So, on your baptismal day, your parents and sponsors PROMISED God that they would faithfully bring you to church, teach you the Lord’s Prayer, the Creed, and the 10 Commandments, place in your hands scripture, and provide for your instruction in the Christian faith. But it wasn’t just your parents and sponsors who made a promise that day, because your church made a promise that day, as well. We also promised to do our part in teaching you and instructing you in the Christian faith, and that is where Confirmation comes into place.
At at First English Lutheran, Confirmation is a 2-year program, which culminates in your being confirmed in April/May of your 8th grade year. During this Rite of Confirmation, TWO things will happen: First, you will stand up before family and friends and say, “Yes, I believe.” And second, a pastor will lay their hands on you, praying that the Holy Spirit will be stirred up in you (cool, huh?) as the pastor affirms that you are God’s child FOREVER!!!
So what is Confirmation? It’s a period of instruction (2 years) when you get to know God and Jesus Christ, more fully than ever before. And, it’s a time when you will build stronger, deeper relationships with your peers.
